Paving

Bluestone Versitality

When it comes to building flat, easily accessible surfaces for walkways, patios, driveways, and pool decks we normally turn to stone pavers, or in other words, paving stones. Today we will about one kind of paving stone which is called Bluestone.

What is Bluestone?

Bluestone is one of the many kinds of stone pavers. Its common name is Balsat, and it is widely used in both commercial and residential landscaping. Why? It is durable, attractive, and ideal for all kinds of uses including patios, pool decks, stone steps, or entryways.   Being one of the hardest materials with high durability is what makes it perfect for outdoor landscaping.

The colour is traditionally grey-ish blue.  However, you can find a full range of colours in the market – from rust, tan, blue natural textures to brown shades.  The colour is determined by the depth the stone has been extracted from. The deeper it is the more unique the colour will be.

One of the main advantages of Bluestone is that it rarely gets slippery because of its rough surface.  It can tolerate all kinds of weather and temperature fluctuations, so it doesn’t matter where you live, you can use Bluestone for landscaping, and it will endure snow and ice or desert heat.

Size and Shape

Bluestones can come in many shapes: uniform squares and rectangles or natural shapes.  The later is called ‘crazy pavers”. The origins go down to using the wasted offcuts or broken pieces during the installation of larger cut stone and outdoor pavers. This method is quite cost-effective and, depending on your budget, can make a real difference

Maintenance and Cleaning

One of the good things about Bluestone pavers is that they are very easy to maintain and clean. All you need to do to clean paver is to hose it with high-pressure water and the dirt will come off. No need for scrubbing and crawling around on your hands and knees.

However, like with many things, it is better to prevent than to cure. To keep your bluestone looking its best, we recommend that you have it sealed. Sealing makes cleaning much easier in addition to protecting the material and making it last longer.

How to buy Bluestone and install it?

It is very important that you decide on the shape you want your pavers to be before choosing your bluestone. Whether they are going to be irregular random pavers – “crazy pavers” or uniform size ones in a shape of rectangular and squares. Irregular ones are harder to install but may add a bit of character to your garden.

Remember, bluestone is a natural material so it will have little clefts or crevices, or rust stains. This is one of the beauties of the natural stone.  Bluestone generally is 15mm to 30mm thick.
